No fan of gambling in Atlantic City

Work and Travel Experience

Since I’ve known myself, I've always wanted to travel and see the whole world. I went on my first trips when I was in College. Being a student, I have tried to take advantage of any opportunity to get to new and exciting places, to get to know different people and cultures. So, I went to the United States through a program designed for students called Work and Travel USA. The idea was, as the name of the program states, to work and travel to the United States during the summer vacation.

As a student you can easily apply even online to this program and going through specialized companies you can choose a summer job in various fields:

  • public relations
  • hotels and restaurants
  • moving and storage
  • tourism
  • recreation parks

Once you get there, how easy is it to travel?

In terms of travel, you have to do it on your own.

I had been working for a month, and I had only seen the Virginia town where I was both working and living. I confessed my desire to travel to all my American colleagues that I worked with. So, one day Theresa - a 60-year-old colleague of mine tells me she's leaving together with a group of friends to Atlantic City on a Saturday and she can take me with her. I was very excited about it so, naturally, I accepted right away.

I still remember the emotions I had when I got into that coach on a Saturday morning. I was anxious to see the city I knew so little about.

Theresa had forgotten to tell me one important detail though: it was a trip specifically designed for gamblers. All the people in that coach were going to go gambling in a casino. No city tour, no sights, no tourism-related stuff. And I just found out about it while already in the coach. Okay, that's good. I had some pocket money with me, so I decided to use them just like everybody else: gambling.

About Atlantic City

I was going to find out later that the Atlantic City of New Jersey is one of the most famous tourist destinations for gambling, shopping and entertainment in the United States of America (other than Las Vegas that is).

Most hotels in the city include also a casino, and one thing I learned from the movie Rounders (about a passionate poker player) is that in Atlantic City gamblers come during the weekends from all the surrounding states, and especially from New York City which is not that far away. So, during the weekend, all casinos are full of tourists, but also professional poker or other game players.

The first experience in a real casino!

Since I only knew what a casino is from the movies when I entered one for the first time I felt like being in a fantasy world. The casino was huge and allowed you to gable in a lot of ways:

  • Slots
  • Roulette
  • Card games

It was the first and only time I played a slot machine. I was not lucky, but I liked the experience.

I also wanted to try other slot machines, but every 10 minutes a security guard asked me to identify myself, considering I probably looked younger than 21 years, the minimum gambling age in New Jersey.  So, I got bored and went out to explore the city.

Atlantic City Tour

Because I got some tips about the tourist attractions in the city from my friends there, I tried to tick off a few from the list.

I walked on the famous Boardwalk, which stretches along the beach for 4 miles and is lined by hotels, casinos, restaurants and shops.

Boardwalk has earned its fame in part thanks to the Monopoly game (a board game where players play two-sided dice to move around the board, buying and trading properties, and developing them with houses and hotels), which was inspired by Atlantic City and his streets.

Also, HBO has released a movie series called Boardwalk Empire, which has many references to the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. So, this walkway is quite famous all over the world.

A famous building that I would have really wanted to see was Lucy the Elephant, a 6-storey building that looks like it was recently built but dates back to the 19th century. Lucy was built to promote real-estate sales and attract tourists. Now it is one of the oldest tourist attraction buildings in America. Unfortunately, it was very far from Boardwalk, so I postponed this goal for another time.

I chose to go to the Garden Pier Museum because I passed through its facade. The Garden Pier hosts the Atlantic City Art Museum as well as the Art Center.

The History Museum features exhibits about the boardwalk and the development of the city as a major gaming destination.

The Art Center hosts art exhibits for regional and national artists and they change weekly.

What I was able to see as well as the Steel Pier, situated across from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, which was not far from the other Casino where I had to return in the end. Steel Pier is a 1,000-foot-long amusement park built on a pier of the boardwalk. It also has a long history dating back over 100 years. In 2018 it actually celebrates 120 years of existence.

I had not been able to see all that I wanted but walking for several hours in Atlantic City was a real joy and I felt like Alice in Wonderland!

Online Casino or a real one?

Although nowadays there are many variants to gamble and play all kinds of games on the online casinos, I still understand the pleasure of going to a real casino and playing there. I think a good comparison would be reading a real book that you have in your hands to reading the same book on an e-book reader. The product is the same, the feeling is different.

On the other hand, online casinos come with a lot of attractive bonuses, from welcoming bonuses to no deposit bonus codes.

In conclusion, if you do not want your money spent on a plane ticket to Atlantic City or Vegas, just try gambling online! Or do not gamble at all! The choice is yours!
